First Thursday
Home

In November 2006, after the evening service, a group of members were discussing starting a new group at Sale Moor. We finally decided to just "go for it" and see what happened! The night chosen for our first meeting was the first Thursday in December, hence the name First Thursday Group.  It was decided the format should contain both religious and secular items and should have an element of fun, also the evenings should be led as far as possible by our own members with an occasional visiting speaker.

Recent Meetings:

On October 8th, Jean Booth talked about things which made her laugh. After giving a few examples she invited the rest of us to tell about the things which made us laugh.

November brought Peter Worrell to talk about his recent trip to Nigeria. Peter also invited Judith and Albert Graham along. They had stayed at the same place but some forty years earlier and they arrived resplendant in the robes they had been given on their  first visit  Between them they gave us a wonderful talk, with slides, on their seperate visits. Judith started it off followed by Albert  then we were brought right up to date by Peter. It was a really great evening. Joan Smith

The December meeting was a Happy First Birthday and Christmas party. Happy Birthday because it celebrated twelve months of "First Thursdays" and December reminding us of Christmas. Andrew Smith led us. We had party games and it really is hard to put the tail on the donkey !!! - and passing the parcel still  has anticipation  "at later ageodists"! Andrew led us in Carol singing and related stories and traditions from other countries' Christmas celebrations. A good evening with the true meaning of Christmas included.   Mary Martin

The New Year began with a talk by Rev. Lawrence Copley about the village in Nicaragua where he spent some time helping to build a school for the children of the village. He showed slides taken more recently showing how the school and the village have developed since he was last there.

February brought us another Rev. This time it was Malcolm Lorimer who talked about "Humour and the  Clergy". Malcolm brought his collection of funny postcards all featuring vicars in humorous situations. A lot of them he had transferred so they could be shown on the overhead projector and they caused lots of laughter.  He also told us about taking them to the Methodist Conference where he almost got into trouble because of them but fortunately quite a few ministers bought copies from him! (it`s nice to know some  Ministers have a sense of humour!)

We are now looking forward to our March meeting  when Corin Travis will be with us, presumably we shall see some dancing then!  Next to April  when we have Sheila and David Marsden to entertain us and then we come full circle in May as Mavis Barker was one of the people started who First Thursday off and she will be back to lead us again.

Everyone is welcome to these meetings which are held on the first Thursday of every month at Sale Moor Methodist Church, Northenden Road. We start at 7-30pm and finish around 9-15pm.  Joan Smith
